Barrel Nuts

At FTC, our highly expert engineers are able to draw on our extensive experience of working in the aerospace industry to support and advise our customers on the most appropriate choice of material for their barrel nuts.
Barrel Nuts

Barrel nuts are frequently used in circumstances where there is no access for a wrench to tighten the nut. They are typically cylindrical or semi-cylindrical in shape, with a threaded hole machined perpendicularly into the shank. Some barrel nuts are internally threaded vertically into the shank with a flat or domed head at the other end. The appropriate bolt can then be screwed into the hole and retained securely. Barrel nuts are a common choice in the aerospace industry as they remove the need for a flange to be added to the receiving part and so reduce the weight of the fasteners.

Range of materials offered at FTC

At FTC, we understand the challenges of selecting the optimal material for airframes and for the specific environments. We are able to manufacture barrel nuts in a wide range of materials.  Metals include stainless steel, brass, titanium, aluminium or a range of alloys such as Inconel. Non-metal materials include nylon and polyimides.  Each material has specific qualities that will make it more or less appropriate for use in specific environments.  Stainless steel is strong and resistant to corrosion, but is relatively heavy.  Non-metal materials are lighter and can provide enhanced thermal and electrical insulation, but are less strong and are prone to becoming brittle if exposed to certain corrosive elements or UV light.

FTC’s manufacturing capacity

FTC is located in California, conveniently close to national and international transport hubs.  Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility enables us to manufacture large-scale, bulk orders of highly consistent and repeatable items, and deliver them directly to your warehouse or factory floor.  We have an excellent reputation for on-time delivery, meaning our customers can rely on us to a part of their solution to reducing lead times.  Equally, we are able to work closely with our customers to develop new designs and to manufacture small orders for individual projects.
